For me, the most delicious life is a balanced life — something I’ve been trying to achieve for many years. In 2007, luck and opportunity came togehter and allowed my husband and I to spend a year in Budapest, Hungary. It was there that I was able to rediscover many joys that I had put on the backburner, such as travel, cooking, and writing, and discovered some new joys too, like life drawing. What struck me most about my time in Budapest, and in Europe in general, however, was how much attention is given to living a balanced life (whether people realize it or not). In stark contrast to my life in the U.S., people didn’t struggle to make time for friends or family — having that time was a given. Having a civilized lunch, meeting up with friends after work, taking classes, visiting with family, enjoying time off in the countryside: these were all activities that people would regularly engage in as a part of the normal social fabric.
Now that I’m back in San Francisco, I’m trying to hang on to my European lessons and keep that balance alive and well. It’s not always easy, but I’ve also learned that balance is a dynamic thing. I hope to reflect that in my writing.
